Oct. 8 is deadline to register for Senior Expo

Senior citizens are invited to join with friends, family and Scott County area seniors for a day of exhibits, speakers, entertainment, prizes, food and fun.

The 2008 Scott County Senior Expo is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 17 at Shakopee High School, 100 17th Ave. W., Shakopee.



Tribe gives $1 million grant for S.D. grocery store

The people of the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota will soon have their own tribal grocery store thanks to a $1 million economic development grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Community in Prior Lake.

The new grocery store will have a deli, bakery, pharmacy, and healthy foods to help combat a diabetes epidemic on the reservation. About 80 jobs will be created for the store, which is expected to open in mid-December.

Coats for Kids collection begins Oct. 1

Collection of new or gently used winter coats, snowsuits, snow pants, hats, mittens, gloves and boots for families is under way; infant through adult sizes are all needed. This Coats for Kids 2008 event is sponsored by the Salvation Army.

Shakopee High School is set to "Burn Out the Stars" this week with homecoming activities to include the annual parade at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The parade will begin at the junior high and travel south on Fuller Street to the high school. At the end of the parade, the public is invited to attend the coronation of the homecoming king and queen inside the school.

Royalty candidates are Sam Anderson, Dani Dahl, John Loonan, Alyssa Hargrave, Tim McComas-Bussa, Sami Kelly, Alan Alger, Andrea Scanlan, J.T. Holcombe and Karissa Saunders.



Chaska man sentenced for fatal crash

Jacob Thomas Victor, 26, of Chaska, was sentenced to one year in jail for two counts of felony criminal vehicular operation resulting in two deaths, according to a press release from Carver County Attorney Jim Keeler.

“We argued for a sentence of eight years in prison for these crimes. We are disappointed by the judge’s decision,” said Keeler. Assistant Carver County Attorney Peter Ivy argued to the court for prison time for Victor, the release stated. Judge Philip Kanning presided over the case.
