Crosswalks

Crosswalks adjacent to schools: I've had a difficult time seeing people in the crosswalks adjacent to the high school in the early morning. Seems like they should be better lit. With all the traffic, headlights glaring, watching for turning vehicles, etc. it is difficult to spot a person crossing the street. Hey, I know, take the $15,000+ for the dog park and add better lighting to crosswalks adjacent to schools.

Back to page topClaude Herman Kolb, 86, of Shakopee was killed Saturday night after being hit while crossing the road to Shakopee High School.
First and foremost, condolences to the Kolb family.
Although detail is lacking regarding this situation, it's possible that this is a situation as I described previously. Be it 7 PM or 7 AM, the traffic, the headlights, cars coming and going make it difficult to see pedestrians. Maybe additional lighting in this area (and other schools)might be worthy of studying.

Back to page topI will agree that there should be more lighting. In my opnion more importantly people need to drive safer. I frequently see speeds of 45mph and running stop signs on tenth ave. There should also be no parking on tenth street as this does block views of the traffic signs.

But pedestrians need to take some responsibility too. Obey traffic rules, use a crosswalk, use the walking paths or sidewalks, don't run or walk in the BIKE lane (on 10th), wear light colored clothing or better yet reflective clothing especially at night or dusk. Be responsible to make sure the traffic stopped when you're in a crosswalk.
Today, November 5, day after snow...kids were walking in the street on Marschall because the sidewalks weren't shoveled (from Eagle Creek towards the Middle School). Unsafe. (Would like to know if sidewalks being cleared of snow for the majority of the walkers to the schools is a consideration for delay/cancelling school).
I know its the law to stop for pedestrians, but many times the traffic forgets and the walker just steps out there, figuring the driver will be able to stop on a dime. Yes, if the walker is hit, the driver will be charged...but seriously a vehicle is heavier than a person and can hurt or kill person. Walkers need to LOOK FIRST.
