Well I apparently wasn't drinking enough chai or coffee because my favorite spot when I stop (about once every two weeks or so) was closed when I pulled into the drive-thru this morning. When they didn't respond immediately, as they usually do, I pulled around to the front of the shop -- which looked closed -- and found a sign on the front door. As of Friday, Aug. 22, Dunn Bros. is done. "Thanks for your patronage" it said.
With Starbucks also on its way out, that leaves just Caribou (in two locations), The Coffee Bean downtown and Coffee Ta Cream at Town Square Mall -- all fine choices but it depends on where you're coming from or going to as to whether they are convenient.
So, people have said there were too many coffee shops in Shakopee. What are the thoughts now?

Before Caribou and before...
Back to page topBefore Caribou and before Starbucks, there were even more independent coffee shops. So many, in fact, that I bet on a per capita basis we had more coffee shops than Seattle. What is the 2nd Caribou location you refer to? I know of only the one at Marschall and Vierling. It seems like so many businesses have missed the target when it comes to market analysis. Rainbow, for example, comes to mind instantly. Now Starbucks and now Dunn Bros. as well.
The second Caribou location...
Back to page topThe second Caribou location is off County Road 18 at Southbridge, next to Panera, in the strip mall across from where Wal-Mart is.
I really like the idea of...
Back to page topI really like the idea of non-corporate, locally owned coffee shops. They are unique and the service is usually better. However, it's much cheaper and convenient to stop as a Super America or Holiday now days. Also, diners and restaurants like Perkins used to make a fortune selling coffee by the cup but from what I know the smoking ban is killing business.
I would recommend anyone to spend the time and money visiting a locally owned coffee shop.
That's sad about Dunn Bros....
Back to page topThat's sad about Dunn Bros. I think the location was bad, all the twisting and turning to get back into that location. If the proposed hotel going in down the street was in sooner I think the location would make it.
Sidenote: Perkins coffee, yuck.
Also, have you notice that Panzenella (Dangerfields) is not open as much as it used to be? Wonder why?
We used to go to Panzanella...
Back to page topWe used to go to Panzanella alot, and when we noticed the signs that they were only going ot be open for breakfast and lunch, we asked why. It all seemed like a business move, not enough demand to cover the wages and such, and I sorta rememeber there being some staffing issues too, but not sure of that one, so don't hold me to it. Then when the bridge closed for that little bit, that really sealed the fate.
Considering the number of...
Back to page topConsidering the number of businesses, across the board, that are closing and reorganizing due to the economy, I think it's funny that you feel it's because of the smoking ban. People just can't afford a $3 cup of coffee. These coffee corporations where banking on people coming several times a week for a $3 cup of coffee, now the customers are coming in maybe once a week because of finances. I don't remember a Caribou or Starbucks or Dunn Bros. allowing smoking before the new law was put into place. How can non-smoking be the reason for their closing?
As for other restaurants, when a cheeseburger meal costs close to $9, a person or family can't afford to eat out often.
All I'm saying is there...
Back to page topAll I'm saying is there might be a correlation between smoking and coffee drinking. Not everyone who drinks coffee smokes, but I'm just talking about their habits and nothing political in the sense of smoker's rights, or justifying the habit. -Same thing with bars. This last year has been extremely rough for bar owners. I know this because I work for them and over half the bars I've been in are closing due to the smoking ban and a rough winter. Bar owners can hardly afford their heating bills due to people continuously leaving and re-entering for a smoke. All I'm saying is I'm pretty sure the whole smoking ban has really hurt the bar/restaurant/cafe business. From what I've seen, I'm willing to bet my next paycheck.
Shakmom3, I was referring to places that have (past tense: had) smoking sections.
Yeah, the more I think about it: money is tight. Everything has become expensive and our economy is really hurting.
The smoking ban certainly...
Back to page topThe smoking ban certainly has had some impact but I'd be willing to bet McDonalds entering into the premium coffee market has had a much larger impact. Especially since the trend is not just a local one. Starbucks closed over 600 locations nation-wide. Cheaper prices and generally more convenient locations are probably big reasons. For me, I also prefer the local shops and have skipped from Say When to Pour Mary's to Coffee Bean.
I still think it was Dunn...
Back to page topI still think it was Dunn Bros. locale in Shakopee that precipitated its demise. Economy is second.
Let's think about this:
Location of Dunn Bros. - there is not a lot out there except for Lowe's, Ruby Tuesdays, Subway and CVS. Ruby Tuesdays and Subway is on the same side of the street as Dunn Bros. The Liquor Store near Dunn Bros has already changed ownership. I would think it was because, the sales are lower than other liquor stores - the prices are higher there too.
The way that the parking lot meanders around it was just a pure pain to get to it. And I did frequent Dunn Bros.
Whereas, the Caribous are both located around more populus business areas and their locations doesn't require too much meandering. The East Caribou (Best Buy), there are other eatery business, haircuts, and a gas station, even though you have to cut around on one access roads. Would be interesting to see if the Subway near Dunn Bros. sales are the same as the other 3 locations.
The Say When Coffee Shop closed it was because of poor management. The hours just could not compete and service was slow. It was not because of Starbucks. Studies have shown that the mom and pop coffee shops mostly THRIVE when the chain cookie cutter Starbuck open up nearby.
Starbucks on the otherhand, has committed a mostly fatal business error, "it is competing against itself". Starbucks bottles and sells its cold coffee drinks, and it sells its beans at the local grocery store. People will buy it if they can get it more frugally than spending $3.50 for a cup of coffee. For 8-10 dollars you can go to Target/Cub/Rainbow and buy a bag of Starbuck beans and brew your own. Ask Gap what happened when their entity Old Navy was less costly than their Gap brand. Old Navy is going away...Gap is eliminating its competition.
The smoking ban I think has very little to do with the loss of the Dunn Bros or Starbucks. I believe Starbucks across the board, have been smoke free establishments for years.
I am more sad about...
Back to page topI am more sad about Starbucks- close to the hospital where I work (and for all of us there). If you don't have to cross 169 then you don't want too! Too Many lights and too much time to go 3 blocks! I occasionally stopped at Dunn, but is way out of my way. Same with the local shops- out of the way! Say When was the best and easiest-. BUMMER- for everyone.
As for the comment of McDonalds getting into "premium coffees" YUCK! They were giving samples and I tried all of them- if the sample was to get me to come back for more-IT DIDN'T WORK! They were AWFUL! cold ones were hot/warm. Warm ones were cold....YUCK YUCK YUCK! I would much rather spend another $1 or 2 and get a drinkable and enjoyable drink!
I prefer Starbucks. Which,...
Back to page topI prefer Starbucks. Which, started out as a small "mom and pop" type coffee shop in Seattle. Fortunately, I live in a region of the country where there are about 10 of them within 15 miles of my house. It is good stuff.
Is Coffee Ta Cream coffee...
Back to page topIs Coffee Ta Cream coffee any good? I've only had their ice cream and unfortunately their sandwiches. Ice cream good - sandwich bad.
I own a small coffee shop in Jordan called Awakenings, it's at 106 1st St. We are entering our 2nd year of operation.
In Jordan, I think we're still trying to get people to drink coffee and expresso drinks, as we make more profit off of our lunches. Which our sandwiches and wraps are awesome! We are growing, but not at the pace I would like.
Just wanted to comment about...
Back to page topJust wanted to comment about the coffee shop Awakenings in Jordan. I can't say enough about the shop. I agree, the lunches are so delicious and I go often for the sandwiches (fav is the Monte Cristo) and less frequent for coffee. I am constantly telling people about the coffee shop and most people never knew it was there! SO I am hoping business will boost and keep going since I love this quaint, cozy and friendly place! Spread the word!
Thank you so much for the...
Back to page topThank you so much for the compliment Roxy75! That makes me feel good!
I'll buy you a sandwich next time your in. Tell them Nate said it was ok!
It is important to recognize...
Back to page topIt is important to recognize Dunn Bros started out a small local coffeeshop on Snelling & Grand in St. Paul and remained for years the purveyor of some of the finest coffee in the cities.
http://www.dunnbros.com/aboutus.asp
Their coup de grâce, they roasted their beans on site, and they continue to do so in every store across the twin cities today.
Maybe Dunn Bros would consider occupying the site Starbucks will vacate?

Back to page topHey Nate,
I teach guitar in Shakopee and I'm looking for a place where my students can do recitals, or just have open acoustic jam sessions. Would you consider doing something like that?
