Back to page topDino's Gyros has closed its Shakopee store and does not plan to re-open. I'm so sad. Where can one go now when they have a craving for a gyro?
Darn. And I had just learned...
Back to page topDarn. And I had just learned how to pronounce gyro. It is not, I was told, pronounced "hero" or "gyro" as in gyroscope. It is a "year oh ?" I think. Best of luck to Dino. (Is that Deano? or Dyno?)
Now. Say "Karaoke."

Back to page topNo. Were I from the range, I would say "Shah-CO-pee." Actually, I am from the range, but parochial folks like you from Hibbing don't count the Cuyuna Range. I was born in Miner's Hospital in Crosby very near an ore pit. That's also Miles Lord country.

Back to page topIts sad seeing the local greek stores close but when people are thinking about what can we get to eat greek usually doesn't come up its pizza chinese etc as far as a quick meal. I'm always trying to figure out a greek recipes for making a gyro here taste like it does in greece but thats pretty difficult.
On a more on-topic note ......
Back to page topOn a more on-topic note ... Dino's is at the state fair. They have a new building near the intersection of Larpenteur and Snelling in, I think that's, Falcon Heights. Also one in West St. Paul, near my house if you know where that is. But near here? I'm not so sure.
There's a place called It's Greek to Me that comes highly recommended. By me, of course. That's in the Lynlake area of Minneapolis.
Good luck with your gyro, Sfiecke.

Back to page topI think the correct Native American pronunciation (which the area was founded by) would be Sha-KO-pee.

Back to page topExcuse me! I'm trying to talk gyros here. Pllllleeeease.
I'm not surprised about...
Back to page topI'm not surprised about Dino's closing. It's too bad. Shakopee residents, in general, seem reluctant to embrace cuisine outside of the normal chains (Applebee's etc) or Mexican food. Although the nearby Chinese Buffet place appears to be doing OK. But that is an "all you can eat" place. I've never been there, and don't plan on it. For instance, my favorite restaurant in town is Thailand View, yet most of my friends and acquaintances have not heard of it or seem very willing to try it. It too, is likely to close unless their business picks up. It's across from the old Happy Chef (now El Toro).
Perhaps with the growth in the City and County, along with an influx of new residents, places like Dinos (and hopefully Thailand View) will survive.
I agree, Thailand View is...
Back to page topI agree, Thailand View is very good. However, I think it is the location that will be the killer for them. Most people, in my circle of friends anyways, tend to avoid the "old" part of town for some reason. There is no doubt that the new energy force of shakopee has become the area surrounding the Marshal Road / 169 area. With Large Business like Cub Foods, Target, Kohls and many more smaller names filling in the gaps there seems to be the buzz that used to be along first ave. / main street... just my thoughts at the moment...

Back to page topThailand View is FANTASTIC. Best Thai food I've had outside of Thailand. Too bad they don't have much of a customer base... they really need to get the word out so they don't have to close.

Back to page topDino's rules. Too bad it's gone. I can't believe this is one of the most popular things on this site!
If people in Shakopee are so interested in Greek food, they shoulda frequented the place with open wallets once in a while. Then, I'd still be able to get my Wednesday afternoon treat.
Instead, I have to go to Roseville for gyros. That's a long way from Jordan.
It floors me that people...
Back to page topIt floors me that people flock to the sameness that is Applebee's rather than something unique such as Thailand View, Dino's (when it was open) and Fajita Repulic among others.

Agreed! However, if you...
Back to page topAgreed! However, if you like authentic Greek food--you will have to make a run to Up Town in Lynlake's (Minneapolis) "It's Greek to Me."
OR EVEN Santarini's in St.Louis Park. Shoot, even Michael's Supper Club in Rochester, MN has Greek items on their menu--Of course, since it is first generation Greek ownership!!!
I am very fond of Greek food--actually, I make it most of the time at home (as do I thai food too).
I would love to see the Restaurant owner of Dangerfield's step it up a notch.....rather than the typical basic bland supper club food that is all you can get without driving over 40 miles just to get "better". The owner is GREEK--why not have MORE GREEK items on your menu???? The Greek PizzA---HAD IT, BLAH! Step it up---TRY A TWIST OFF "SPINACHE PIE" (spa·na·ko·pi·ta n. A Greek spinach pie made with layers of phyllo and a filling of seasoned spinach, onions and scallions, feta, and sometimes eggs.)
GRILLED LAMB CHOPS---OH, MY!!
Galaktoboureko (??????????????? 'milk burek')is my favorite dessert, and these individual servings are a terrific way to present this dessert in a different way. They are made with the same delicious, light, slightly lemony egg custard filling, but instead of making it in a pan with layers of phyllo on top and bottom, the custard is rolled up into neat packets made with phyllo, and then soaked in a sugar syrup after baking.
Pastitsatha (say: pah-steet-SAH-thah) is one of the most, if not the most, famous island dishes, a fixture at celebrations and festivals, in restaurants and homes. It is made with meat or seafood cooked in a thick tomato sauce with healthy helpings of spices and seasoning, and served with thick pasta (the same ziti type pasta used in making pastitsio). It is generally made either with beef or rooster (mostly in the villages), and there are also seafood variations made with lobster or shrimp. Pastitsatha calls for rooster or chicken, cooked in a sauce of red pepper, cognac, tomatoes, and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, served over pasta and topped with grated cheese
In Greece, fruit and fruit salads are traditional ways to end a meal. Dress up this simple and easy combination of favorite fruits with a sweet and tart dressing of honey and freshly squeezed orange juice for a healthy and delicious summer dessert.
I could go on and on........SHAKOPEE--
GROW UP AND GET THE TASTE!!!
K:)

Back to page topYou ruined Wednesdays.
Just for the record, I started this forum -- of that, I'm kind of proud. It's amazing that it has gotten 4,612 hits to date. Dino's Gyros isn't even in business anymore. And people keep clicking on this forum for who knows why.
In essence, Dino's Gyros is like Van Gogh. He's nothing while he's alive -- you don't give him the time of day -- but then he's just short of a god once he dies.
Why?!? Why'd Dino's of Shakopee have to die this way?
I really wish you would've eaten there, so it didn't close. There is nowhere that's so tasty as Dino's. Every Wednesday, when I go to Shakopee at about lunchtime, I wish my Greek food was there.
Thanks a lot, patrons of Shakopee. That's why you ruined Wednesdays.
I believe the reason Dino's...
Back to page topI believe the reason Dino's closed was because of the rent for that location being WAY to high. The same reason Ground Zero Coffee left that location.

What do you think about a nicer Greek restaurant with some homemade baklava? That would be a great addition to the area.
Know anyone who wants to open one? Spread the word and reserve a table for me :)
