I think the Minnesota Twins can make it to the World Series this year. We'll take the wild card by beating the White Sox and let Detroit knock New York out of the playoffs while we waste some lousy West Coast team. Then, we're a fairly even matchup with Detroit.
A short look back in history also shows that wild-card teams fair well in the Series. Boston, Florida, Arizona ... there are more, and ... this October or November, add the Twins to the list.
Go, Johan, go.

I like your optimism,...
Back to page topI like your optimism, mats12, but if you look at our rotation of starting pitchers today (Aug. 28), how can you get excited about anyone beyond Santana? Radke: hurt. Liriano: hurt. Silva: hanging by a thread. Garza: inexperienced. Bonser: flirts with disaster.
The Twins have gotten this far with smoke and mirrors. God bless 'em, I hope it continues, but I fear a dose of reality is just around the corner.
Then again, I'm a glass-is-half-empty kind of person.
True, but a pessimist would...
Back to page topTrue, but a pessimist would have also said to look at this lineup full of hacks and has-beens (with only one Joe Mauer and one Justin Morneau). Who really thought Michael Cuddyer would have more than 15 home runs this year, let alone have a chance for 100 RBI? Who thought Nick Punto or Jason Bartlett would secure starting spots in the infield? Who thought we'd be willing to pay the salary of who-was-that-former-starting-thirdbaseman? Who remembered Jason Tyner? Who'da known Shannon Stewart would have another bad, injury-stricken year?
Forget the rotation. We've been hitting the cork out of the ball. All we need is five solid innings from anybody, and we can hand it over to the bullpen -- September call-ups should help.
Our biggest problem is beating Detroit and Chicago. Pray that their stars get and stay injured.
OK, so after that series...
Back to page topOK, so after that series against KC, we're basically going to have to have the bullpen carry us to the playoffs. I guess I have to admit that.
