Season six of "Project Runway" to debut tonight. Here are some things the critics and bloggers are saying about local designer Christopher Straub:

"adorably hopeful," Rachel Sutherland of The Charlotte Observer N.C., http://www.tmcnet.com

"Christopher is very sensitive, very emotional. He wears his emotions on his sleeve," Tim Gunn of "Project Runway" http://bloggingprojectrunway.blogspot.com

Straub's is "some of the best pre-show work we've seen yet. This is a little mean, but quite often we look at these pre-show portfolios and they all look way too "fashion student" to us; overthought and underpolished, if you know what we mean. Not so here. This stuff could be hung right on a rack in a boutique, ready to go. Plus it's all cute and very, very feminine," Tom & Lorenzo, http://projectrungay.blogspot.com

Straub "was born and raised in the Twin Cities, but his presence had been a bit more obscure – until now. The gorgeous designs in his design portfolio make it clear he’s finally in the spotlight he deserves," Jahna Peloquin of St. Paul Staycation, http://stpaulstaycation.com

"The Project Runway website has interactive sneak previews, comprehensive profiles of the designers and their “before Runway” portfolios (judging from that, Christopher Straub is looking like an early frontrunner)," Marie Coleman, DC Style Examiner, http://www.examiner.com

Last night my sister and I...

Back to page top

Last night my sister and I settled into the couch for the "Project Runway" debut. Both fans of the show previous, we had extra incentive last night wondering how Shakopee designer Christopher Straub would perform in his first challenge and stand up against the designers from New York and Los Angeles.

"I'm from Minnesota," Christopher told the designers as they met each other in the apartment.

"Oh, Minnesota," they replied. You know the tone. That kind of wonderment and skepticism that people on the coasts use when introduced to someone from Middle America.

"Yep, Minnesota boy."

Love it!

I thought the first challenge was a great opening to introduce us to the designers. Red carpet is L.A. So was the manufactured drama by Johnny Sakalis, a recovering drug addict who nearly folded under the pressure in the first episode. He rallied, not surprisingly, and while I didn't love his dress, it was the type of thing stars would wear.

Our favorites of the night: Irina Shabayeva's long gold dress; Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman's navy "safe" dress; Gordana Gehlhausen's light blue short number; and, of course, Christopher's creation.

Well, New York, Los Angeles, the Midwest knows a little about fashion. Christopher, the self-taught designer from Shakopee, won the first challenge, receiving immunity for next week. That guarantees we'll see at least two more outfits by the local designer. Supermodel/judge Heidi Klum said Christopher's dress would be the most likely she'd wear, a compliment indeed.

Being humble Minnesotans, however, we'll have to celebrate Christopher's victory with just a little smile.

I was super surprised to see Ari Fish go home, though her space-cadet dress was out there. But Fish is the type of personality "Project Runway" producers like to keep around because it's good TV.

What are your thoughts from the first challenge? Surprised to see Lindsay Lohan as guest judge?

What came first? The chicken? The egg? Or one really odd looking baby sling?

I have to say I’m not really into conceptual design. I like wearable pieces, so last night’s “Project Runway” had a clear loser in my opinion.

The designers’ challenge was to create a chic maternity look for actress Rebecca Romijn.

Malvin was sent home in challenge two for his fertility goddess inspired maternity dress. I agree with Judge Nina Garcia, I was expecting a baby to be hanging in the sling.

As Tim Gunn said it: What woman wants to look like a chicken?

Anyway, Malvin is out and southern designer Mitchell is safe again by the skin of his teeth. His look was sloppy, and two weeks in the bottom two doesn’t bode well for his future. I think a lot of people maybe wanted him to go this week.

My other least favorites of the night: Ra’mon-Lawrence (his dress looked, as everyone described it, like a bowling ball bag) and Epperson (jumpsuits are never flattering).

The clear favorite of the night was Shirin’s burgundy dress. The folding and draping around the waistline was beautiful.

Other favorites: Christopher (very wearable); Althea (red carpet pregnant glamor); Gordana (wearable); and Irina (loved the color and attempt at youth).

Who were your favorites and least favorites of the night? Did the judges make the right decision?

Back to page top

Avant-garde, I don't get you.

Call me practical. I like things that make sense. Avant-garde does not make sense.

Beachwear makes sense.

Team challenges always make me nervous because you never know what’s going to happen. Case in point, last week’s challenge.

I thought for sure Ra’mon and Mitchell would land in the bottom two with Mitchell booted out. Well, Mitchell was booted out but Ra’mon won. First time a winning designer had a teammate sent home.

It was due. "Three strikes and you’re out." Mitchell wasn’t prepared for the show; he looked terrible each week.

I didn’t understand Ra’mon’s creation. It was space-age and looked like someone spilled a drink on it, but then again, I don’t get Avant-garde.

The judges also didn’t have much of choice. How were they to pick between Epperson and Qristal? They weren’t in the design room seeing how it went down.

Happy to announce Shakopee designer Straub is safe yet again.

Still, I hope we can lay off the team challenges for awhile. They remind me of college when we had to work in teams for English presentations and psychology papers. It was meant to teach teamwork. In the end, the workload was never evenly divided. And had it been, my perfectionism wouldn't have been to happy.

While teamwork is an important skill necessary in the workplace, it’s also one of those skills that are hard to cultivate. I want to be judged on my own merits, not the combined effort of a team with different personalities, opinions and ways of doing things. I don't want to take the blame or praise for someone else's performance.

What did you think of last Thursday’s show? Are you pro or con when it comes to team challenges?

By the way, apparently the other judges were not as in love with Ra'mon-Lawrence's dress as Nina Garcia. This is from Richard Drew of the Associated Press:

"I was stunned by the editing of the Thursday show," says Gunn, who doesn't see the episodes until they air. "To be perfectly blunt with you, the storyline as I was living the show was that Ra'mon was going home…that he and Mitchell were BOTH going home," Gunn told USA TODAY's Cindy Clark in an interview this afternoon to chat up his new comic, Loaded Gunn. "Then you see on the show that Ra'mon is dyeing the garment in the sink. That's after I made him take it out of the toilet, which he said he was using because it had a deeper basin. He was desperate to get some dye on it."

"On the runway, the deliberation went on and on, with no one in Ra'mon's camp other than Nina. She was intent upon Ra'mon winning based on innovation. Heidi was like, 'Who would wear that?' and Nina firmly said, 'I would!' So I am watching the (Project Runway) website because we have two days and five hours remaining, and I am intent on winning that dress and I'm going to give it Nina!"

"PR" Episode 4 Foreshadowing...

Back to page top

"PR" Episode 4
Foreshadowing is one of the great inventions of storytelling, and “Project Runway” rarely leaves me hanging.

Building the drama requires show producers to focus on the top and bottom designers in the workroom as a way to build tension, especially in the early weeks of the show where there are so many designers. However, this leaves little imagination when it comes to the runway.

Last night the designers had to create an eye-catching design for their models to wear to an industry event.

Qristyl is out after playing it too safe and not trusting her self. It was the second episode she came off scared of her own opinion. Her dress was too plain.

While I understood the judges critiques for the other bottom two – Johnny and Logan – I had some other least favorites: Irina’s dress was a little too department store; the collar on Louise’s dress nearly swallowed the model; and Ra’mon, please no more big flowers.

Favs? I liked Epperson’s brown dress, though it could have been cleaned up a bit for my taste. My favorite of the night was Carol Hannah’s purple dress. I loved the top.

Some of the better quotes was Straub’s fear his dress might look like salad (Listen to Tim Gunn’s opinion on that), while Logan lamented he was making a “Smurf Prom” dress – the judges agreed.

My favorite comment: “The world doesn’t really need more of this,” judge Zoe Glassner said about Johnny’s short, purple dress.

"PR" Episode 5 The claws...

"PR" Episode 5

The claws came out last night between Johnny and Nicholas. No surprise both were in the bottom two.

I really liked the challenge and have to give props to my sister for guessing the designers would use newspapers to design a dress. She nailed it thanks to that old joke: What's black and white and red all over?

No strong personalities have really come out yet, but the show did get snippy last night. Many of the designers were doing a little trash talking about each other's work and attitudes. Top two most annoying were Johnny, who appeared to have lied on the runway about the reason he abandoned his first dress, and Nicholas, who has nothing nice to say about anyone and is even annoying when he smiles. It gives me the creepers.

Overall, I agree it was Johnny's turn to get sent home over his "arts and crafts" project. The winner could have went to either Irina or Althea and I would have been happy. Both had interesting designs for different reasons.

Surprised to see Gordana in the bottom three. I thought the dress was well constructed, even if it fell on the boring side.

My favorite comment of the night was when Heidi asked guest judge and well known designer Tommy Hilfiger whether a steam iron can ruin a dress.

Guest judge Eva Longoria Parker's reply: "Tommy doesn't iron, honey."

"PR" Episode 6

Farewell to Ra'mon-Lawrence who received Heidi's "Auf Wiedersehen" last night on the show, which to be honest took me by surprise.

Ra'mon showed at New York Fashion Week earlier this month, which I thought may have signaled a win on "PR." But now that I think about it, it makes sense he didn't. It would have been difficult to create an entire show in just eight months directly after creating a show in five months for the "PR" finale last February.

I was assuming Louise was on her way home, but "snoozefest" won over risky and ambitious. Ra'mon's dress was horrible. While all the dresses last night were so different, his definitely stood out and not in a good way.

Judges seemed to reward designers who were "the dreamers" last night, awarding first place and immunity to the annoying Nicolas .

Shakopee's Christopher again was in the top three for his period dress, representing a vampire on her wedding day. It got special accolades for how well it would film from all angles.

Looking ahead next week, it's another team challenge, which the designers hate. Last preview shot shows Christopher crying on the runway. That doesn't bode well for our last Minnesota contestant.

By the way, Michael Kors is back next week.

"PR" Episode 7

Last night's show gave me a scare. I was worried Shakopee's Christopher was going to be sent home when he landed in the bottom two. Fortunately, the judges chose to send home "overworked bridesmaids dresses" instead of "disco satin bubble dress."

I didn't think Christopher's shirt dress was all that bad, though I will agree the two looks didn't go together at all. Even Tim Gunn mentioned that in the workroom. The judges reamed them pretty hard as Heidi said it was "a stretch to think any customer would want to buy them." And Christopher and Epperson felt so good going into the runway. What a shock for them!

However, I think Christopher deserves a second chance and I'm glad to see him make it into the top nine. Not everyone feels that way, however. See comments from Blogging Project Runway.

What do you think? Did the judges make the right decision?

By the way, Christopher won a challenge on the "Rachael Ray" show yesterday by making an outfit out of vegetables. Check it out here.

"PR" episode 9

Christopher, you're scaring me.

Three straight weeks in the bottom three and Christopher seems to have fallen from his golden perch. Judge Nina Garcia called his outfit for pop star Christina Aguilera "tasteless." Ouch. That's probably not what Christopher is going for.

The last couple weeks (I saw a rerun of episode eight's wedding dress challenge), Christopher has been very confident going into the runway. The judges, however, have not had kind words.

Irina has pulled away from the competition and found her role as the "mean girl" on the show. Althea and Carol Hannah have also shown some of the best looks in recent weeks. Could it be a female sweep at the finale?

I'm ready to say goodbye to Nicolas. I can't stand his smiley face anymore. It just gives me the creeps.

Logan and Gordana are also floundering. If either of them or Christopher stumble in episode 10, I expect them to hear "auf wiedersehen" from Heidi.

"PR" episode 11 When did...

Back to page top

"PR" episode 11

When did ugly become fashionable?

Aletha won last night's "Project Runway" challenge with one of the ugliest pair of pants I ever saw. She modeled the pants after her winning suit design earlier in the competition, but I agree with Logan, they looked more like Malvin's egg creation in week two.

But the judges loved them and that's what matters to stay on the runway.

Poor Shakopee designer Christopher Straub isn't so loved right now. His "bedskirt" look, thank you Heidi for that comparison, put him in the bottom three yet again. His dress reminded me of the vampire bride dress which put him the top two in the movie genre competition. Wonder if Christopher is getting a little one note?

His outfit didn't deserve an "auf;" I agreed with the judges. Logan's Judy Jetson/fashion project/'80s music video look was bad. Goodbye, Logan. I didn't think you were so good looking anyway.

I must admire Christopher's optimism. He loves what he is putting on the runway and that's really what matters - so says, Gordana.

So on to the final challenge. I'm curious how the judges plan to weed five down to three in one episode without marketing a big double elimination, like they did earlier in the show but failed to deliver on (which in retrospect is what kept Christopher here). Or they may choose to take four to Bryant Park but only let three show. They've done that before.

Watching next week's preview, I can't make any predictions about Christopher's future. It's the third preview that ends with him about to break into tears - or wait, is it he's so happy for making it to New York Fashion Week? I can't tell.

If the "Models of the Runway" preview is any indication - which it was to me before episode 10 that Christopher was safe - Christopher's model Katie seems pretty worried about making it to fashion week. If Christopher were to have been "in," I can't imagine she'd be that worried. Therefore, must we assume he's auf?

All I know is he's doing something with stalactites - yes, like a stalactites in a cave.

Hmmmmm.

"PR" episode 12

We didn’t even need a show.

My sister and I knew exactly who was headed to New York Fashion Week.

It's not rocket science when three of five designers have never landed in the bottom three up against two designers who have a total of nine bottom-three finishes.

The judges made the right decision, of course, sending the three females to Bryant Park. Any of them could have faltered last night and still had a spot on that famous runway.

Goodbye to Shakopee designer Christopher Straub, who despite no formal training made it to the top five and was the final male remaining.

His dress really wasn't that attractive, especially after a judge compared it to a long jean skirt. However, I have to give Christopher props for his confidence and sticking with the garment.

“This piece speaks more about me than any other piece I put down the runway," Straub told the judges.

However, he also knew he was the oddball.

"[I'm just the] wacky, weird guy who doesn’t listen and just does whatever he wants to do," he said.

I didn't like any of the final challenge dresses all that much. Althea's was sloppy on top. Gordana's was boring and simple. Irina's dress reminded me of a '70s Roman goddess - maybe her inspiration by not very realistic. Carol Hannah did the best job capturing her inspiration, I thought, but the dress was safe.

I think I'll be pulling for Carol Hannah in the finale, if she can make a pair of pants. While Irina has produced the best garments yet, her attitude is a turn off. And something about Althea just rubs me the wrong way. But I'll have to wait to see the final collections before I choose a favorite.

None of the girls were in the top three in the first episode, but they are the best representatives of the season and deserve to show collections.

Back to page top

Reading some of the blogs about yesterday's show. Everyone agrees that Christopher should be out (here's a great summary of why); however, many are angry about the Gordana decision.

"Gordana Gehlhausen was, shockingly, Out. It is a bit perplexing, since her gown was great and so closely resembled the Monet painting, but Nina felt Gordana’s biggest flaw was that she didn’t know who she was as a designer." Nick Verreos, season two contestant

"Why didn’t GORDANA win for her dress? The judges never seemed to warm up to her. But in my opinion, she was the only one of these designers left who has amazing technical skills combined with an artistic beauty and vision that could really add a voice into the fashion world. Gordana is a clothing maker, yes, but she is also an artist. None of the other girls can come close to claiming this. I’m not even going to mention Christopher." Chris March, season four contestant

Comments from Blogging Project Runway reactions' post:

"Gordana was robbed."

"Gordana didn't deserve the Auf today. Not if they were going by the way they've made decisions all season, all these years."

"Gordana has been unfairly critiqued the whole season and tonight she was aufed without any reason at all. The judges have had some sort of weird prejudice or irrational bias against her: she either makes beautiful outfits that are judged too 'safe,' or she makes outfits that the judges agree are beautiful, but she's criticized for not being confident enough. She could never win."

Back to page top

Part one of the finale didn't give all that much away, except Carol Hannah is sick, Irina has a lot of black in her collection and Althea says "yeah" a lot.

The collections all seem alike, an occurrence when judges take the safe route and bring three similar designers. The over-sized sweaters - been there, done that. Carol Hannah's gowns - think we've seen them already. Ugly pants - definitely been a season for that.

I will be pulling for Carol Hannah in the finale Thursday - and not just because she has Christopher as her work partner. Though that helps!

Carol Hannah seems to be the underdog, not just because of her illness, but her unassuming personality. The other two come off much stronger and fit the "Project Runway" winning designer stereotype. Carol Hannah makes great clothes that fit a woman's body, similar to season two winner Chloe Dao.

We'll see what shakes up when the models walk the runway on Thursday's finale.

Well, the end has come and Irina is the winner of "Project Runway."

Overall, the finale was a downer, much like the whole season. If it hadn't been for Shakopee designer Christopher Straub, I'm not even sure I would have watched.

The whole season seemed dull. The challenges lacked a creative spark and most weeks I only held my breath at elimination if Christopher was on the stage.

Even the finale lacked punch. Carol Hannah's illness was a lifesaver for producers as it was the only real drama of the episodes. I won't count Tim Gunn's worry that the designers were not on stage in time. That was totally manufactured.

Waiting for Heidi to announce the winner was boring, since it didn't really matter who won. I didn't love or hate any of the collections. And in the end, Irina was probably the practical choice, having stood out the most throughout the competition. But again, it was rather been there, done that.

I am no fashion maven, however, so maybe I just missed the drama between the contestants - then again, I don't really like conflict. I'd be interested in hearing what others thought about the season as a whole.
