The fellows in the 'staches

» Read similar stories filed under:

Minnesota Wild hockey has gotten ugly lately.

No, it's not the team's 7-12-2 record. No, Derek Boogaard isn't making any nastier hits than normal.

It's the mustaches.

A number of Minnesota Wild players are growing mustaches during the month of November in honor of "Movember."

According to the Minnesota Wild Web site, Movember is "changing the face of men's health" by raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer research.

Defenseman Nick Schultz signed up his teammates in support of a friend's father who was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Some of the Wild players to grow mustaches include Brent Burns, Cal Clutterbuck and John Scott.

I commend the Wild players for bringing awareness to prostate cancer research, but really this is an ugly trend. How ugly? Think Ron Burgundy from "Anchorman."

When I first saw the growth I thought this was some weird superstition to get the team winning. Well, it didn't work. Every time I see the guys on the ice now, I have to make sure I haven't time warped into the early 80s. Scary.

There are some strict guidelines the guys must follow this "Movember," including not attaching the 'stache to sideburns or a goatee. Read more about it at http://us.movember.com/. To date, Movember has raised $47 million making it the world’s largest charity event for men.
