The golf course is not always a friend

Over the past couple of years, my family has taken up the game of golf.

As a former softball player, my transition to the sport has been slow. Apparently the goal of golf is slightly different than softball and I can't help getting up to the tee wanting to knock the guts out of the ball every time. But I'm learning - slowly.

I learned maybe my most frustrating lesson about golf last week when my mom, sister and I decided to take a crack at our local par-3 course Friday morning. We arrived to find dozens of others with the same idea.

After waiting nearly half an hour to tee off, I was a little nervous. There were still several groups waiting behind me and it always makes me uncomfortable to have people watching. You see, when I golf, you never know what you're going to get.

It started off with a bad tee shot to the right and never got better. Like a true golfer, I'm going to lay blame at my clubs. I was playing with my brother's, which are weighted and have the tendency to kick every ball right unless you use them perfectly. My brother can; I can't.

By the fourth hole, I had already lost two balls to water hazards. Somewhere in the murky bottom of that second pond lies my favorite pink Susan G. Komen golf ball.

I had also picked up my ball on the second and third holes before  reaching the green. I'm not known to lose my temper on the golf course, knowing that for every few bad shots, I'll hit a fairly decent one. But my best shot of the day didn't come until my chip onto the green on the ninth hole, so you can bet that the bad shots added up.

It was an ugly day, by far my worst since I started playing a couple of years ago. However, the frustrating thing is that over those couple of years I have made marked improvement. Golfing with my dad last month, I made two pars. Therefore, to see my swing revert back was, shall we say, frustrating. OK, to be completely honest, I don't think I have ever been that mad in my life.

But it was my sister who summed up the day with a new lesson taken from the golf course. She typically isn't afraid to show her disgust for a poor shot; however, she had a good day Friday.

Her advice: Golf is always good for exercise and a big dose of humility.
