THE REAL ISSUE is why the city is willing to settle on a chief candidate that lacks the experience, expertise, and education that Chief Schwaesdall had to offer this community. Why did we, the taxpayers, fork out the money for an expensive consulting firm to recommend the most qualified candidate (based on rigorous interviews and extensive evaluation of FACTS) so that city administration and council could arrogantly make a different decision without providing any justification? A resignation has no bearing whatsoever on guilt or innocence, and people that think it does demonstrate their own ignorance and narrow minds. As for your quotes, I agree that arrogance diminishes wisdom - the mayor and 3 of the 4 city council members proved that last week when they voted to accept Chief Schwaesdall's resignation. I say next time we hold elections for mayor or city council, let's put the runner ups in office instead of the ones that come out on top. Apparently this is the process our city leaders value!

Isn't the real issue the allegations brought against Mr. Schwaesdall? If he truly believes he did nothing wrong, why did he resign? That says a lot.

kidjon...you may have come up with the most logical fix to these fair weather City Council members. This whole thing smells like a schit house door on a tuna boat. The mayor hides behind a so called law that bans discussion about employee resignations. under the same law he wouldnt let the people discuss the hiring process for Fire Chief... the Mayor and the other 3 who accepted his resignation did so it would seem without much hesitation which would lead me to believe its every man for himself at City Hall.

What a sad time for our city that our Mayor and council are so intimidated by the effective leadership Chief Schwaesdall demonstrated for many years that they were willing to let him resign. It is shameful that our tax dollars are going to pay the wages of an inferior fire chief candidate rather than hiring the top candidate (Schwaesdall) as was originally reported in this newspaper. Chief Schwaesdall, if you are reading this, thank you for your years of dedicated, faithful service to our community!

Was it on this site that I read that Schwaesdall was resigning because of something he did while at a bar? I'm guessing that it was omitted after it was submitted.

If I remember didn't a fire fighter last year get the boot for several severe driving violations, including DWI?

And wasn't the city ice arena manager getting in trouble with the law for multiple DWI's? He was able to keep his job right?

What's going on with these city employees and all of the alcohol related allegations?

Maybe the problem with the city council is that they have not sent a strong enough message of the consequences city employees face when they make major mistakes with alcohol. Wouldn't it be nice for the city to make the front page of the paper for something positive?

Interim Shakopee Fire Chief Ed Schwaesdall, who was in line to become the department’s first full-time chief, resigned Tuesday during a closed meeting with the City Council.

Schwaesdall, who had been the part-time chief since 2005, was recently put on paid administrative leave while an allegation was investigated.
