The study was probably done

The study was probably done by the same entity that decided to only paint two crosswalks at Vierling and Eagle Creek Blvd. rather than 4. Each corner has sidewalks leading to the intersection, but only two crosswalks have been identified.

Ok, same street (17th) and the intersection just to the east (Spencer)...justifies a 4 way stop...traffic is the same..so why doesn't the intersection at Fuller and 17th justify a four-way.

Oldman is correct this was a four way when the road opened up (Fuller and 17th).

I have been almost hit because someone didn't stop at the southbound stop sign on Fuller.

When was the study done? In the summer? or when school opened?

Guess we'll wait and see if someone gets hurt.

I don't know where Mr. Gustafson from The County Engineering department was when the intersection was opened but it was an all-way (four stop signs) intersection and not a temporary set of signs as he stated. It was a four way stop for some time, apparently long enough for drivers to become accustomed to everyone stopping, since they put an electronic billboard there to warn drivers of the change. I belive that after the change there were accidents at the intersection before the billboard was installed.

Read the county's response on this issue in a news article here. You'll also find the intersection study that supported a two-way, versus all-way stop.

Possibly but I'm not for sure. There were most often 2 squads at the old H.S. parking lot the past few years. One was Officer Wycoff, (sp) the he is a year round employee who has his office in the H.S. and his car was in the parking lot and another officer would show up just b-4 school was let out to sit either on Spencer St. or 10th Ave.

The same was true of the old Jr. High, I live just a few blocks from where one of the two squads would sit at the end of the day at the Jr. High. So I would venture that there really is no more cost involved this year than others, just a different location. BUT THE 4-WAY IS MUCH NEEDED FOR SAFETY'S SAKE.

Apparently the City is the patrolling entity since I saw a Shakopee Patrol parked on the sidewalk today, 09/06, at the intersection of CR77 and 19th Ave with his radar pointing westbound. Apparently the cost of using a patrol car and officer is more cost effective than a 4 way stop sign

What false assumptions?

These are questions and/or concerns. That could easily be addressed via this venue.

Since you have taken the time to respond by even posting...clear up the "assumptions" on my part. Especially since others read this and have seen these "assumptions".

I believe other people will not post on this issue but have the same "assumptions"...so answering these "assumptions" on this venue would be better for the public instead of addressing me privately as an individual.

I do have this profile set up with my email but have no clue as to why that is not working.

Yes, Mr. Berg is a member of the school board. The name matches from the school website. This is being proactive, since most of us cannot attend school board meetings (and since nothing seems to get accomplished anyhow...talk about "passing the buck").

My question is why hasn't the school district/board bothered to approach the county for the request?

Seems to me that would be the school district/board job to ensure the safety of our students. I agree with JodyB...what (if) the board has approached the county what was the county's response.

Still doesn't address the crosswalk situation in front of the new high school main entrance?

Another question, who is responsible to patrol the area, Shakopee Police or Scott County Sheriff? Will there be a presence at all or more that just the first few days of school? (to catch the speeders, jaywalkers, non-stopping drivers for pedestrians?

I don't believe either the city or school district have control over the traffic controls on these streets. Scott County has the final say on these. The city and school district can certainly request changes be made, and it's my inderstanding that these same concerns have been voiced. To truly be proactive, you should contact the county or, perhaps better yet, our county commisioner.

This intersection originally was a four way stop when 17th Ave was extended to CR15 but someone in the City decided to remove it. Probably the same people who had left and right turn lanes installed at CR79 and 17th Ave and then diagonally marked the lanes so they are not useable. I agree that it should still be a four way stop and it should be changed before the start of the new school year. As for a crosswalk, I doubt that it will get much use. The crosswalk at the former Junior High has a signal and the majority of the students still do not use it.

All is well and I'm glad that you're willing to state your mind. I enjoy conversing over items that people are passionate about. I'm not for sure if you can get a printed copy of the minuets from the District Offices or even in the Shakopee News printed version. Who knows they may even record the meeting. I think that some meetings have even been broadcast on our local cable channel, you could check at the Community Center for that information.

Moved recently from the movie theater side of town to across the street from the new high school.

I know of kids that live in my old neighborhood and they still have to walk.

Ok, truce....I thought I offended you and I couldn't figure out what I stated that was wrong.

I/WE are concerned for the safety of our and your students too. I know many of the kids in the area. This whole situation is worrying. As I said I almost got hit last week because some driver decided not to stop and proceeded to turn east on 17th...and glared at me like I was the one in the wrong.

The school board highlights just don't have all the actual conversations. I can't attend the school board due to scheduling conflicts with my school and other school related meetings.

wilbursgirl,

I didn't think that you said anything wrong.

I think that Pro-Active means: ACTING in advance to deal with an expected difficulty.

Hopefully in a well informed positive manor. (We can catch more Flies with Honey than with Vinegar)

The School Board had a meeting on Aug. 13 (which I didn't attend either b/c of 45-60+ hrs. at work). Highlights of the meeting can be read on shakopee.k12.mn.us web-site under School Board/meeting highlights.

I know that the district has made an allowance for 100 more students to ride the bus until the Fuller St./Vierling/17th Ave. issue is resolved and made a non-hazardous route to students walking to the Sr. High. All of the families that were affected by the hazardous route were informed of the new busing change, via a letter in the mail, and that it also stated that as soon as it was no longer a hazardous route then the 2 mile rule would go back into effect.

You had mentioned this in an earlier blog (August 7th) that you live by the Movie Theater in the Presidential neighborhood and the walk for your child was more than 2 miles away from the Sr. High and that there wasn't a safe route to the Sr. High. (So I mentioned that most of your concerns were addressed by the School Board already.)

I don't know what exact authority the School Board has in placing stop signs and cross walks but I would venter that they have a lot of weight b/c they are governed by the different levels of government and are part of the government body in Minnesota.

I wouldn't ever wish that someone get hurt first, that is why I said that we need to be Pro-Active.

You seem to be a concerned parent that is willing to do anything for the protection of any child and that is what all of us parents want to do for any child. I have 5 children and two grandchildren and I would do the same.

I'm thankful that you can make yourself available to monitor the intersections. That is the start of what I thought, as concerned citizens, we could DO to get the ball rolling in our favor.

Then "the powers that be", will be well informed and can put the stop signs up and add a cross walk in a timely manor b/c of our concerns and the actions that we did to resolve this issue.

Hopefully this has cleared the air on what I was saying. My intention was far from wanting to be offensive.
