The Rev. Richard Larkin dies at 86

The Rev. Richard Larkin, 86, of Shakopee, who celebrated his 60th year of ordination last year, died Friday at Hennepin Country Medical Center, Minneapolis. Visitation is today from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Shakopee.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church with Archbishop Harry J. Flynn the celebrant. The Rev. William F. Stolzman will be the homilist. Honorary pallbearers are Ed Rein and Leon Hausladen. Pallbearers include Tim and Francis Larkin, Dick Stokes, LeRoy Bauer, Bob Klehr and Dick Wiggin. Interment will be at Catholic Cemetery, Shakopee. Larkin celebrated his first Mass in St. Paul 60 years ago. Born in Barry, Minn., in Big Stone County on Dec. 28, 1921, he was the youngest of seven children. The family moved to St. Paul when Larkin was 13, where he attended Nativity School, Nazareth Hall and the St. Paul Seminary. He was ordained in 1947 and was assigned to several metropolitan-area and rural parishes through the years, including Ascension, St. Anthony, St. Joseph, Christ the King, St. Michael’s, Nativity Bloomington, Goodhue, Belle Plaine, Villa Maria Academy, and later in life, Cedar Crest Academy. Larkin had been assisting at St. Mark’s Church in Shakopee for more than a decade and was the chaplain for the Father Lucian Galtier Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of Shakopee, where he was a member as well. He is survived by cousins; Sister Rose Marie Larkin OSB, Patricia Taffe-Driscoll (Bill), Kathleen Larkin-Reis (Ken) and several other cousins.
