Despite three challengers, John Schmitt safely won re-election on Tuesday to a fourth term as Shakopee mayor.
The 71-year-old retired corporate finance director was returned to office with 47 percent of the vote. A nearly 800-vote gap separated him and city Councilor Matt Lehman, who came in second with 28 percent and retains his seat on the council.
Newcomers CJ Walor and Rachel Romansky trailed further behind in the mayoral races with 17 and 8 percent of the vote, respectively.
Turnout for the off-year election was higher than two years ago, likely buoyed by the school referendum campaign and an usually large contingency of candidates for school and city offices.
Of 18,373 registered voters, 24 percent cast a ballot Tuesday. Precinct 1 in the far northwestern pocket of Shakopee had the best turnout at 34 percent, while precinct 12 (located north and south of Highway 169, west of Marschall Road) was the worst, with 14 percent.
The most votes (573) were cast in precinct 10 in the Southbridge area, but turnout there was only 18 percent.
In 2007, 14 percent of registered voters participated in the city election. That year, Schmitt had one challenger and the two city councilor candidates ran unopposed.

Not very happy to see that...
Back to page topNot very happy to see that we have a mayor that do not seem to care for the people of Shakopee. He did not show up at the candidate’s forum at Marcus Theaters last Sunday. I understand he might have had a valid reason, but not providing a reason for his non-attendance I consider it disrespectful with our community. The citizens present at that meeting were concerned with the mayor's lack of transparency and interest in the issues of the community. The police department was also criticized in the meeting for their lack of involvement in the increasing meth problem we have in Shakopee. Mayor we demand more involvement in the community concerns, we demand a more effective police enforcement of law by the police department and we demand your respect to the community when your presence is requested. Shakopee is a raw jewel, but the jewelers are taking too long to polish it. Our city council and administrators appear very stale. Get on with the times and start using Facebook, YouTube and this blog as your forums. Nobody under 55 watches the community channel, this is media from the 70's and in today’s world they are very unappealing. I am happy for our new council woman, Pamela Punt whom I supported. Pamela, please bring a spark of energy to our soporific city council and mayor, and get that police force moving, you heard the complaints.
