Take the family to the parks
May 15, 2008 - 5:49pm — Ruth Anne Maddox
Several family-friendly activities are taking place the week of May 18 in Three Rivers Park District. No matter where you live or visit, there’s something going on in your neck of the woods. In the south metro: On Sunday, May 18, “Birds and Binoculars” takes place from 3 to 4 p.m. at Richardson Nature Center in Hyland Park Reserve, Bloomington. Join a naturalist in the wildlife viewing room to discover the birds at the feeders. Use binoculars to observe and identify the birds feasting on seeds and suet put out for them to enjoy each day. This ongoing event is free and for all ages. In the west metro: “Pond Insectigations & Exploratorium” is offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday May 18 at Lowry Nature Center in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Investigate and explore the fascinating world of "water bugs" as we catch, magnify and identify these mysterious water wigglers. Use a variety of lenses and microscopes in our makeshift "laboratory" to make these little beasts look larger than life! The cost is $5 and the activity is for ages 6 and older. Reservations are required; call (763) 559-6700 and reference activity 21130105. On Saturday, May 24, “Frogs and Tadpoles” takes place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Lowry Nature Center. Hike and enjoy the wonderful sound of male frogs "singing" for mates. Learn to identify several species of frogs from their distinctive songs. See frogs up close and help feed them after the hike. Free, for all ages. In the north metro: Take part in “Pioneer Games and Toys” from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at Eastman Nature Center in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Dayton. Come play old-fashioned games in celebration of our state's 150th birthday! Play Jack straws, ball and cup, corn-cob darts and many more. Make your own buzz saw and corn husk doll to take home. The cost is $5 and family/group rates are available. This event is for ages 4 and up. Also on Sunday, May 18, “Free Family Fundays: Bubble Magic” is an ongoing event from 1 to 3 p.m. at Kroening Interpretive Center in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. Bubble play is science. Blow bubbles. Discover why they are round, and stand inside a bubble. This free activity is for ages 3 and older. “Grab a Net” takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at Eastman Nature Center. Search for bugs in the field and in the pond. Sweep nets and pond nets, magnifying lenses, and jars available all day for hands-on family fun! This ongoing event is free and for all ages.
