YahooAn "All-American Parade" will take place in Chaska at 12:30 p.m. Sunday as part of the Third District American Legion Convention.
The convention will occur at various locations in Chaska this weekend. Three hundred people are expected to attend.
Sunday, the convention opens up to the public with a memorial service in City Square Park at 10:30 a.m. Names of the deceasedwill be read at that time. The memorial service will be followed by an All-American Parade at 12:30 p.m.
“That’s something people like to participate in,” said Steve Nelson, American Legion Post 57 commander, of the three pages of participants who have already committed to being in the parade.
“There is some competition among the legion marching units,” he added. “There are awards and everything. It’s serious to the point of fun.”
Nelson said the parade is a showcase for the community.
“We’ll cross our fingers for good weather and that everyone shows that said they would show,” he said.
Also being showcased this weekend will be the city of Chaska's plans for a Veterans Memorial Park. At the May 7 city council meeting, plans for the park and initial funding were approved.
“We’d like to show it off,” said Nelson.
