Man arrested again for fleeing police

By Shawn Hogendorf, Correspondent

Just five days after making a court appearance on charges of possession of a controlled substance and fleeing police — stemming from a incident in July — a 21-year-old Shakopee man was arrested and jailed for fleeing police, again, on Monday.

Patrick James Gustafson was charged with fleeing a Prior Lake officer, driving after suspension, failure to provide proof of insurance, expired registration and no motorcycle endorsement.

Gustafson is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) with intent to sell; one count of possession of a controlled substance (cocaine and ecstasy); and fleeing police stemming from the July incident. He is set for a contested omnibus hearing on those charges on May 14.

This time around, Gustafson allegedly fled the same police officer he fled in July.

According to the criminal complaint, officer Brad Cragoe saw a blue motorcycle traveling east on County Road 42 when he observed an expired tab on the license plate.

Cragoe followed Gustafson and when checking the license plate learned the registration was expired, the complaint stated. Cragoe activated his emergency lights on McKenna Road but Gustafson didn’t stop, continuing to travel at about 30 mph.

Cragoe then pulled into the oncoming traffic lane as no vehicles were approaching when Gustafson allegedly looked directly at the officer who motioned for him to pull over and kept on driving, the complaint stated.

Gustafson then allegedly broke hard and pulled behind Cragoe’s squad car when the officer pulled into the northbound lane of McKenna Road, stopped, got out of his squad and signaled for Gustafson to pull over, according to court documents.

Gustafson allegedly pulled the motorcycle to the left, accelerated and drove around the officer as he was standing in the middle of the street yelling at Gustafson to stop. Cragoe then got back in his squad and followed Gustafson until he stopped the motorcycle in a driveway in the 5500 block of Tinta Lane.

Gustafson told the officer he was not attempting to flee, but rather find a safe place to pull over, because he didn’t want to stop on the shoulder of a gravel road, said the complaint. According to police, Gustafson has nearly a mile of road to pull over.

If convicted, Gustafson faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison and $5,000 fine for fleeing police; and 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine for each of the driving violations. He also faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and $10,000 in fines for each of the possession charges and three years in prison and a $5,000 fine for fleeing a police officer stemming from the July case.

Mr Gustafson needs to go to jail for a while. He will hurt someone if he continues to flee from the police. He isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, is he?

kidjon - You are right that he is not the sharpest. A search of Mr. Gustafson's record shows the following convictions...

Speeding (twice, once in a school zone)
Underage drinking and driving
5th Degree-Sale-Marijuana
5th Degree-Possession
Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle (twice)
Liquor-Consumption by persons under 21

I think anonymous would be more comfortable if Mr. Gustafson sped through school zones, drank and drove, and distribute marijuana in her neighborhood. For all of his trouble he managed to get 30 days in jail with an additional 30 days of EHM.

Wow, what a colorful past. He is obviously up for the Citizen of the Year award that Anonymous will emcee. It is always nice to shine the light of truth on things.

Mr Gustafson will not and should not go to jail! I saw this entire "chase" and have it on video for those that want to see it. This tool of a cop just wanted to get his jolly's off at Mr. Gustafson's expense. He nearly killed Mr. Gustafson will his reckless driving. I suggest you learn how to drive and conduct a routine traffic stop officer Cragoe. I certainly don't want my children pulled over by you on their motorcycles. You are a danger to everyone with driving like that. If he wanted to flee the police, he certainly could have on a bike that goes 200 mph.

thats right anonymous. it is that stupid cop's fault for attempting to stop an unlicensed vehicle. It is the stupid cop's fault that Mr Gustafson was driving on a suspended license, had no insurance and had enough weed on him that was packaged for sale. Mr Gustafson had no reason to flee and the cop is making it up. Your kids are much safer with Mr Gustafson driving than the stupid cop. In fact, Mr Gustafson should have the badge and gun and the cop should be in jail. You are the smartest person in the world Mr Anonymous. You are also courageous by posting anonymously on this website. I figure you only wear a skirt when no one is looking.

Instead of saying you have the video and not giving us anyway to actually view it, why not post it on youtube and add the link here?
