Voters renew $4.3 million operating levy

Going into Tuesday’s levy referendum vote, Shakopee School Board members and administrators were “cautiously optimistic” the levy would be renewed.

By late Tuesday evening they were downright thrilled.

“I think it speaks very well of the Shakopee community that they saw fit to continue to support the school district in this fashion even though it is a difficult financial time,” Board Member Reggie Bowerman said.

The Shakopee School Board will have two new faces around the board table come January.

Shakopee voters elected newcomers Carla Shutrop and Anthony Bonsante to four-year terms on the School Board Tuesday.

Incumbents Steve Schneider, Mary Romansky and Chuck Berg were also re-elected.



School vaccinations set to start week of Nov. 16

Public health nurses expect to begin vaccinating Scott County children for the H1N1 virus in school-based clinics the week of Nov. 16. Because of limited supplies, not all schools will receive vaccines immediately, however.



School enrollment up 4.6 percent, pushes total to 6,700

The Shakopee School District continues to see enrollment numbers rise as more young students start in the system.

The school district counted 6,701 students on Oct. 1, Shakopee Superintendent Jon McBroom reported at Monday night’s School Board meeting. That’s a 4.6 percent increase from last October.

A slowdown in the housing market has impacted the district with fewer new students moving into the area, McBroom said. However, the city’s many young families are still keeping numbers high in the elementary buildings.



Annual high school band fundraiser starts Monday

Monday marks the start of the Shakopee High School Band’s annual fruit, candy and cheese sale, one of its signature fundraisers for more than 25 years.

The fundraiser starts Monday and will be under way through Nov. 12. Ninth- through 12th-grade band members will accept orders.

Running for a place at state

Eighth-grader Abbie Annen runs for the Sabers at the Shakopee Invite last week. The Shakopee Sabers boys and girls cross country teams will compete in the Class 2A, Section 2 meet Thursday in Willmar. The Shakopee girls team is ranked second in the state behind freshman Maria Hauger, who is ranked first as an individual. Boys cross country runner Trent Lusignan, a junior, is ranked seventh in the state.
