Lakers stop modest win streak
May 7, 2008 - 3:44pm — tsabeln
A two-game win streak was stopped Monday afternoon when Prior Lake scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Shakopee baseball team 6-1. The Sabers had won two slugfests before meeting Prior Lake at Memorial Park in Prior Lake. Shakopee took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Andrew Zellman drove home J.T. Holcombe with a RBI single. The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when Prior Lake finally got to starting pitcher Sam Anderson for a run. In the sixth inning, things fell apart for the Shakopee pitchers as they gave up five earned runs on six hits to allow the Lakers to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh. Shakopee’s offense struggled as they only got three hits in the loss. Chase Hentges had two of the three hits. Shakopee 10 Hutchinson 9 Shakopee jumped out to a 7-0 lead but needed to hold on to defeat Hutchinson 10-9 on May 1. Shakopee scored six runs in the second inning. The big hit was delivered by Holcombe, who singled to center field with two outs and the bases loaded. The Sabers pushed their lead to 7-0 in the third with a run but Hutchinson answered with four runs in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Shakopee extended its lead to 9-4. That’s when the game started to get hairy for the Sabers. Hutchinson scored three times in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 9-7. In the seventh, the Tigers tied the game with two runs off of pitcher Zach Bohar. In the seventh inning, Shakopee’s bats still had enough in them to scratch across a run and give Bohar the victory. In the game, Holcombe finished with three RBI. Ben Lazzari and Zellman also had RBI. Six different Shakopee players scored in the game. Shakopee 7 Farmington 2 Shakopee had little trouble on April 30 in defeating Farmington 7-2. Senior Chase Hentges pitched all seven innings, giving up only two runs on four hits and striking out six. Hentges also went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored in the victory. John Hechsel also had two RBIs. Zach McBeain also drove in a run. Zellman scored three times in the victory as the Sabers pounded out 12 hits in the victory.
