Sabers bounce back
May 7, 2008 - 3:45pm — tsabeln
A loss in the championship game of its own tournament didn’t stop the Shakopee softball team from defeating Hutchinson on Monday afternoon. The Sabers lost 10-0 to Hopkins on Saturday in the championship game of the Shakopee Invitational. They bounced back from that defeat to beat Hutchinson 6-2. Shakopee trailed 2-1 going into seventh inning when the bats exploded for five runs. Lindsey Sheehan started the rally with a single to left. She was sacrificed over to second by Emily Carstens. Carsten, playing in her first varsity game, drove in Shakopee’s first run of the game. Sheehan scored on Molly Annen’s double. Amanda Beinhorn followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Shakopee took a 3-2 lead on Ashley Walker’s double. Emma Bruss followed with a three-run homerun to make it 6-2. Walker set down the side in bottom of the seventh to give the Sabers the victory. Walker finished the game with 13 strikeouts. The win improves Shakopee’s record to 6-3 in the Missota Conference and 8-5 overall. Shakopee Tourney In the Shakopee tournament held on Saturday, the Sabers opened with a 2-0 win over Spring Lake Park. The game was scoreless for six innings until Ashley Walker scored on an error on Alex Schewe’s grounder to shortstop and Bruss scored on Annen’s single to make it 2-0. Walker got the victory for Shakopee as she struck out 10 in seven innings of work. “Ashley shut them down, giving up only four hits and our defense played errorless ball behind her to help in the win,” head coach Neil Johnson said. In the semifinals, Shakopee rallied to defeat Richfield 3-2. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Shakopee rallied for three runs to advance to the championship game. The game was scoreless until Richfield used two hits, a fielder’s choice, a double steal and two infield outs to score twice. Shakopee’s rally started when Amber Holmgren led off with a single. Sheehan followed with a double to left that put runners on second and third. Both runners scored on Dahl’s single to left and Dahl moved up to second on the throw home. Beinhorn then grounded to second. Richfield’s second baseman got the out at first while Dahl ran to third. The first baseman quickly threw across the diamond but Dahl slid in safely and the ball rolled past the third baseman allowing Dahl to score the winning run. “It was a great comeback and an exciting game for the fans to watch, super job by the team,” Johnson said. All the emotion of the comeback win didn’t carry into the championship game as Hopkins scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning 10-0. Shakopee’s defense committed seven errors in the loss. Conference games Prior to the tournament, Shakopee lost two key Missota Conference games to Farmington and Prior Lake. Against Farmington, the Sabers fell 4-2. Shakopee led 1-0 in the fifth inning when the Tigers scored four runs, two of them on a homerun. Shakopee added a run in the sixth but by the damage had been done. In the Prior Lake game, the pitchers dominated as the Lakers won 1-0 in nine innings. The lone run of the game came with two outs in the ninth inning. Shakopee committed an infield error with two outs and that was followed by a Prior Lake triple to score the run. “In a tight game like this was, the little things make a big difference,” Johnson said. “If we score first the pressure is on Prior Lake. It was a well-played game by both teams but a tough loss.” April 30 at FarmingtonShakopee 000 011 0 0 9 1Farmington 000 040 x 2 10 4Shakopee batters: Mollie Annen 1-2, 2R; Amanda Beinhorn 1-4; Ashley Walker 1-4; Emma Bruss 1-4; Dani Dahl 0-4; Mandy Scherer 1-3; Miah Winterfeldt 2-3; Alex Schewe 0-3; Gabe Ruhland 0-1; Amber Holmgren2-3, RBI.
