Sixty-four of the best claiming horses in the country were entered today for Saturday’s 10th running of the Claiming Crown at Canterbury Park in Shakopee.

The Claiming Crown features seven races, with purses ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 and is open to horses that have started at least once in 2007-08 for claiming prices ranging from $7,500 to $35,000.

The 64 entered horses have, collectively, made their most recent starts at racetracks in 17 different U.S. states.

The Claiming Crown, offering a total of $600,000 in purse money, is a partnership of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA). TVG will provide exclusive live coverage with hosts Matt Carothers and Ken Rudulph anchoring from Canterbury Park.

The Claiming Crown events will fill races 3-9 on Saturday’s 12-race card, which also features the $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes. Post time for the first race is 1:30 p.m. with the first Claiming Crown race expected to go off at about 2:30 p.m.

The day’s first grass event is race six, the $100,000 Tiara, a mile-and-a-sixteenth grass event for fillies and mares that have run for $25,000 or less in 2007-08. Philadelphia Park shipper Allnightdance was installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite in the field of seven. Kendrick Carmouche has the mount for trainer Derek Ryan. Also in the field is 4-1 third choice Inhonorofjohnnie, who won the 2005 Tiara.

The day’s largest field comes in race seven, the $75,000 Rapid Transit, a six-furlong race for three-year-olds-and-up who have run for $16,000 or less in 2007-08. Among the 13 entered to run are 7-2 morning line choice Eagle Storm, a winner of his last four starts by margins of at least 4 ¾ lengths; Forest Attack (4-1), who came within a neck of graded stakes winner First Defence in an allowance race on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill; Tempo Five (5-1), a winner of five of seven career starts, including triumphs at Mountaineer Park, Presque Isle Downs, Keeneland and Fair Grounds; and Fearless Anthony (6-1), who has won four of his most recent six starts thanks to wins at Sunland Park and Lone Star Park.

The day’s penultimate Claiming Crown event is the $100,000 Emerald, a mile-and-a-sixteenth grass affair for three-year-olds-and-up who have run for $25,000 or less in 2007-08. The field of nine is headed by 2-1 morning line favorite Self Made Man, who is owned by Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey and trained by Michael Maker. Self Made Man is one of five Maker trainees slated for action in the Claiming Crown. Last year at Ellis Park, Maker broke his Claiming Crown training maiden in a big way, accounting for three of the day’s seven winners.

The day’s featured event is race nine, the $150,000 Jewel, a mile and one-eighth event on the main track for horses who have started for $35,000 or less in 2007-08. The tepid favorite at 7-2 in the field of nine is the Scott Lake-trained Coyoteshighestcall. The six-year-old veteran of 64 lifetime starts has really hit his stride this year, having won six of his last 10, including the Norristown Stakes at Philadelphia Park. But he figures to have his hands full with the Mike Mitchell-trained Sensational Score, who ships into Canterbury fresh off a four-length score in an optional claimer on July 20 at Del Mar.

This year’s event will mark the eighth time that Canterbury Park has hosted Claiming Crown.
