UPDATE: Blowing snow, very cold for area
February 9, 2008 - 11:07am — Pat Minelli
For Scott County, a winter weather advisory remains in effect until midnight today, with a wind-chill warning in effect from midnight to noon Sunday, according to the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen. Snow will continue to move eastward across central Minnesota this morning as an arctic cold front plows through the region. Strong northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph, with some gusts to 45 mph, will develop in the wake of the front, first over west-central Minnesota, and then spread quickly across the rest of the area. The strong winds will result in areas of blowing snow and reduced visibilities. Temperatures will also fall through the day, causing wind chill values to fall to between 25 below and 35 below on Saturday afternoon and evening. Winds will decrease to between 20 and 30 mph tonight, lessening the blowing-snow threat, but even more dangerous wind-chill conditions are expected through Sunday morning. Wind-chill readings may drop as low as 40 to 45 below on Sunday morning. A wind-chill warning has been issued for parts of central and southern Minnesota east and south of a line from about Onamia to Litchfield to Montevideo to Dawson and for west-central Wisconsin from midnight tonight through Sunday morning. A wind-chill warning means the combination of very cold air and strong winds will create dangerously low wind-chill values. This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.
