Today, Oct. 8, is Columbus Day, and while many federal offices are closed today, most local and state offices and schools remain open. In addition, some observe another holiday: Native American Day.
Though Native American Day is not an official holiday in Minnesota (it is in South Dakota), some celebrate it in place of -- or in opposition to -- Columbus Day.
The administrative offices of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community are closed today in observance of Native American Day.
Columbus Day is the annual U.S. commemoration of Christopher Columbus's landing in the New World on Oct. 12, 1492.
Those who oppose the holiday say Columbus and his followers treated American Indians cruelly and destroyed a large part of the Indian population upon arrival in America.
What do you think about Columbus? Should today's holiday celebrate him? Should Native American Day become an official holiday in Minnesota?

Considering the fact that...
Back to page topConsidering the fact that there are numerous tribes within Minnesota, and that there was no direct contact with Columbus in mn; I think that it should be Native American day. There is barely any recognition for natives as it is. I feel Natvie americans affect the entire state and that we should give the respect that is neccessary. I could go on an on about other races and other holidays but i wont. People should realize that there are some injustices and this day is definately one of them.
