An omnibus hearing for the man accused in the Craigslist murder case has been continued until May 7.
According to attorneys for Michael John Anderson, the first-degree murder case is still in the discovery process and once that is finished, they need time to weigh all defense options.
Anderson, 19, of Savage, is accused of luring Katherine Ann Olson to his parents’ Kipling Avenue home in downtown Savage on Oct. 25 with a Craigslist Web advertisement for a babysitter. Police say he killed the 24-year-old woman from Cottage Grove in a bedroom of the home.
Olson’s body was found in the trunk of her vehicle on the evening of Oct. 26 in the Rudy Kraemer Park Preserve, just over the Burnsville/Savage border.
Anderson was initially charged with second-degree murder, but those charges were upgraded by a Scott County grand jury to first-degree murder in December. Anderson also still faces the original second-degree murder charge.
During the hearing, members of Katherine Olson’s family filled a row of seats in the courtroom. Anderson’s parents sat a row behind Olson’s family and he appeared in court in orange prison garb.
Judge Mary Theisen said the terms of Anderson’s status remain in effect. He is being held in the Scott County Jail on a $1 million bail with the condition that he not be allowed to use the Internet. There’s also a second bail of $4 million, without conditions.
After the judge granted the continuance, the Olson family issued a written statement to the media.
“As our family moves forward we are seeking to honor Katherine and her vivacious, compassionate spirit,” the statement said, “Our goal is to leverage whatever good we can out of this senseless and horrible act.”
The statement also detailed that the family has received thousands of gifts and cards to soften the pain of their grief. “Memorials in Katherine’s name now total over $60,000. The memorial scholarship fund at St. Olaf College will support education for students for years to come,” the statement said.
