No problem in conference

When it plays in its conference, the Shakopee boys tennis team wins. When it plays a team from outside the Missota Conference, the Sabers have lost.

The boys tennis team defeated Farmington 7-0 on April 29 and New Prague 6-1 on April 30. The Sabers lost 7-0 to Chaska last Thursday, then rebounded with a 5-2 win over Mankato East.

Against Farmington, they had little trouble as the Sabers won all seven matches in straight sets.

Seniors Dan Zastrow and Karl Green won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Zastrow won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 while Green won 6-1, 6-3.

Freshmen Erich Pistulka and Justin Hammerschmidt won at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Pistulka won 6-3, 6-2 and Hammerschmidt 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, Jayke Kubler and Mark Holcombe won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 with Clay Carlson and Marco Riley winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 3 doubles Robb Kaufenberg and Scott Michaelis won 6-3, 6-3.

Against New Prague, the Sabers won all four singles matches and two of the three doubles matches.

All four singles players — Zastrow, Green, Hammerschmidt and Pistulka — won in straight sets. In fact, in eight sets those four players only lost eight games.

In doubles play, Carlson and Riley won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and Kaufenberg and Michaelis on 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

Against the Lake Conference’s Chaska Hawks, Shakopee lost all seven matches. Only one match went three sets and that was at No. 2 doubles with Carlson and Riley losing 6-3, 4-6, 5-7.

In the Mankato East match, Shakopee won 5-2 by winning three singles matches and two doubles matches.

In singles play, Dan Zastrow won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Green won 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5) at No. 2 and Hammerschmidt won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.

Carlson and Riley against teamed up at No. 2 doubles and won 6-1, 6-0. Kaufenberg and Michaelis won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
