Kayaking: Try it, you’ll like it

Several opportunities for learning about kayaking are offered during July in Three Rivers parks.

Wednesday, July 9 brings “Flatwater Kayaking 200: Beyond the Basics” from 5 to 9 p.m. at French Regional Park in Plymouth. By popular demand, this session has been added to the season. Take your paddling skills to the next level. Spend a half day on the water refining your paddling strokes, techniques and skills from an ACA certified instructor. The class will be on the water for two hours with a break for a snack and debrief, and then back on the water for one more skills lesson. These sessions will cover more advanced paddle strokes with time to work on personal goals as well. Snack and equipment are provided. The cost is $55 and the course is open to ages 16 and older. “Beginning Flatwater Kayaking for Women” is offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 12 at the Recreation Area in Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Bloomington. Discover the exciting sport of kayaking with this beginning course that focuses on technique and safety to inspire you to go paddling. Learn to select equipment, enter and exit a kayak properly, be safe on the water and provide basic rescue aid. Become skilled at beginning paddling strokes including: forward, turning and stopping strokes. All equipment is provided. The cost is $45 and is for ages 18 and older. Reservations are required; call (763) 559-6700 and reference activity 32301100.
