During my school days, I always ate hot lunch. Very rarely did I have the foresight in the morning to pack a sandwich. But when it came to school lunches, there were some meals I loved and others I disliked.
My favorite school meal was probably corn dogs. I'm not sure why, but I just loved the breading and it never seemed the cooks served them as regularly as my least favorite meals: Italian dunkers, chicken ala king or greasy pizza.
What was your favorite school lunch?
I remember it like it was yesterday. St Marys School, Hamburger gravy over real mashed potatos,Real buttered white bread with Clover leaf milk and chocolate pudding. Then we’d all head out to the play ground…The Church bell would ring while we all stood silent with our hands folded, and with the last toll of the bell it was a mad dash to the biffy before class. Im sure there were some who never made it.
I feel like school chicken a la king must be just terrible. I’m glad my digestive tract was never subjected to that dish.
As for my favorites: Everyone really liked turkey gravy and Italian dunkers at my school. I liked both, preferred Italian dunkers, but I’m thinking my favorite would have to be lasagna. The tacos were also pretty good too. My old school in Michigan used to have Domino’s pizza on Fridays, which was pretty exciting (Domino’s is headquartered in Ann Arbor, where I grew up).
I went to school in Pennsylvania, our food was a little different than here. My favorite was something called chuckwagon steak (breaded with a little spice to it) and mashed potatoes with gravy. We had the best cookies…no bake cookies, chocolate chip and peanut butter. Hoagies were great and something called a wingding, that was a hotdog placed kittie-corner on a slice of white bread with american cheese and slightly baked. Toasted cheese sandwiches were always served with chili con carne. Holidays we got those little ice cream cups and turkey gravy over mashed potatoes and stuffing.
This is an easy one for me.
I lived close enough to elementary school to walk, so I ate lunch at home. But when my mom would give in to my begging, she sometimes let me eat at school on Wednesdays. For that was the day they served what they called barbecued buns, which was really sloppy Joes.
Only these were out-of-this-world good — nothing like I’ve tasted since. It was by far the most popular meal served at school. (Parents loved them too.) In fact, when they had fundraisers or other special events at the school during evenings requiring food to be served, it was BB buns by popular demand. They were served with some yummy baked beans (much better than what I have tasted since) and a slice of cake. Each student received two large buns; if there was any left, the cooks would allow students to come up for thirds. There was always a long line of boys with their trays, just waiting for affirmation from the cooks that they could have another.
Believe it or not, I can still remember the taste.
