A winter storm that dumped more than half a foot of snow across Scott County will come to an end this morning.

According to the National Weather Service, 6.6 inches of snow has fallen on Shakopee since Sunday night.

David Hennen, who was born in Shakopee and raised on a farm in Marystown, appeared in the Budweiser beer commercial during Sunday night’s Super Bowl, according to Judy Beck of Shakopee.

Beck said Hennen, the son of Richard and Janice Hennen, has been working with the Budweiser Clydesdales in St. Louis for about 15 years and has been present during several Super Bowl commercial shots featuring the horses but this was his first on-screen appearance.



Belle Plaine auto dealership sold

BELLE PLAINE — The Belle Plaine Chevrolet Buick auto dealership has been sold.

Matt Saxe has purchased the business, which will be called Matt Saxe Chevrolet Buick Inc., from Joe Itman and Paul Rubin. The dealership will employ 18 people.

Morrie Rubin will lead the sales department and Scott Anger will act as the service and parts director. Joe Itman will be in charge of fleet and commercial operations.

Former owner Paul Rubin will continue to operate his dealership in White Bear Lake.



Historical society, The Landing receive grants

Dollars from the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants will benefit two local history organizations.

Scott County Historical Society receives $6,722 to prepare a book-length manuscript based on oral histories with World War II veterans from Scott County. Shakopee author Tom Melchior is writing the book.

The Three Rivers Park District also received a $6,949 grant to gain intellectual and physical control over all objects in the buildings at The Landing – Minnesota River Heritage Park in Shakopee. The park district intends to improve access to the objects.



Sabers, Lakers to meet in first round of playoffs

Despite having a winning record and beating two teams seeded ahead of them, the Shakopee girls hockey team received the fifth seed in the Class 2A, Section 2 playoffs.

The Sabers will play the fourth seed Prior Lake Lakers at 7 p.m. at Dakotah Arena on Friday in the quarterfinals of the section playoffs.

Edina got the No. 1 seed with a 19-5-1 record. Eden Prairie is the No. 2 seed with a 16-7-2 seed.

This is where the seeding process gets strange.

Snow is both friend and foe to trees and shrubs,” says Tchukki Andersen, staff arborist with the Tree Care Industry Association. “Snow causes its share of damage, as we all know, but in many cases it also protects plants and their roots against extreme fluctuations in temperature that could damage or even kill them.”

Snow does cause four kinds of damage: bending, breaking, splitting and falling or uprooting. Whether woody plants will be damaged in one of these ways depends upon several factors.
