Every state trooper will be on duty Thursday for 'Maroon Day' in Minnesota
by Pat Minelli
The State Patrol is increasing trooper presence on highways on Thursday, because June 30 is historically the deadliest day on Minnesota roads. In an effort to curb traffic fatalities, the State Patrol is putting every state trooper (almost 600 troopers) and commercial vehicle inspector on patrol for one day, Maroon Day. “Maroon Day gives the State Patrol an opportunity to come out strong on a day that is historically the most deadly day on Min...
Setback for track in today's ruling
by Shannon Fiecke
Canterbury Park will try to make its case before a Scott County judge tomorrow after dealt a blow in a major ruling today by a Minnesota judge in the main state government shut down case. Ramsey County Chief Judge Kathleen Gearin sided with Gov. Mark Dayton in deciding that only a limited number of state service can continue in the case of a state government shutdown two days from now. Gearin rejected a more expansive list of services pro...
UPDATE: Minnesota River poised to recede

A string of dry, warm days should allow the Minnesota River in Shakopee to recede. The National Weather Service office in Chanhassen expects the river to hit a maximum crest of 709 feet today, more than 2 feet below the County Road 101 river crossing. The river should begin dropping Thursday, perhaps reaching Shakopee's 708-foot flood stage on Sunday. Shakopee does not have a river gauge, so the numbers are estimates. Upstream in Jordan, t...

Guest columnist: Short-sighted health care bill will hurt state hospitals
From the June 23 Shakopee Valley News By Michael Baumgartner, guest columnist While it is disappointing that Gov. Dayton and the Legislature could not come to a budget agreement during the regular session, there is one bright spot — they now have the opportunity to start over on the Health and Human Services budget and they should embrace it. As it relates to health care, the budget they passed was short-sighted and ill-advised. To ...

Canterbury Park and the Minnesota Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association are seeking a temporary injunction order to allow the Shakopee racetrack to remain open in the event of a state government shut-down. The Minnesota Racing Commission (MRC), the regulatory body that oversees gaming at the state's two racetracks, would shut its doors at midnight Thursday if the state does shut down. With no regulatory body in place, Canterbury ...
Editorial: Time has come to move graduation off-campus
From the June 23 Shakopee Valley News “Time to move SHS graduation?” the headline in last week’s Valley News asked. We think it is. In fact, the move to an off-campus site is overdue. Some Shakopee School Board members and others understandably want to delay the change, and who could blame them? Ideally, the ceremony would be held in the traditional setting of the high school. “I would like to keep it in the district as long as we can,...

Letters from June 23
County program helps fight teen drug abuse On behalf of the Scott County Meth Task Force, I want to thank you for your editorial [June 9] concerning our Take it to the Box program. The drop in numbers concerning alcohol and drug-related charges against juveniles in this county in 2010, when compared with 2009, is significant. We think our educational efforts are directly contributing to that drop. As you correctly pointed out in your edit...

Day says racino gaining support as state budget revenue source
by Pat Minelli
Supporters of a racino at Canterbury Park are expressing confidence today that their dream could come true. Some Republican legislators, who oppose Gov. Mark Dayton’s call for tax increases on the richest Minnesotans, are apparently open to consideration of raising revenue by other means. Allowing slot machines — dubbed a racino — at Shakopee’s Canterbury Park and Running Aces horse track in the north metro is apparently gaining some supporter...
