Shakopee has several open retail locations in seemingly desirable locations: Gold's Gym, the old Rainbow store, Snyder's Drug.
What would you like to see move into those spots? What type of retail venues is Shakopee missing?
A video store in the Snyder Drug building?? Seriously…… it really surprises me, how about a book store in Shakopee??
it use to be a Super Valu before changing to county market.
A Vacancy Rule on commercial property?
You can’t be serious.
Property owners are free to set rental/lease/sale prices wherever they please regardless of the going rate in other cities. And it’s the owner who suffers the consequences when the space is vacant.
If you believe your business is suffering due to location, you may be able to renegotiate your monthly
payment, or better yet, include that option in your initial contract.
I like the idea of opening more restaurants in Shakopee. Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Old Country Buffet, Wendy’s, Outback Steak House would all be nice options for a range of meal and price points. I’d also like to see a Hobby Lobby, maybe even a Sports Authority in town.
The reason that the store that rhymes with “Arget” does not add an add’l door is due to the location of the pharmacy. Adding a door on that end of the store would make it much easier for drug seekers/addicts to come in, rob the pharmacy and ditch out the door. Why do you think electronics and pharmacy are located where they are in the store? I’m quite sure “Arget” will not regreat their decision. Everytime I’m in the store it’s packed in the grocery section.
Shakopee is missing realistic property owners.
The current owners of Rainbow property want between 10 and 13 million for it, allegedly, since last call to them they stated that pricing. Ridiculous, and its also what the agent stated to me at the time. They know its worth something, and they will wait and sit on the property and use it for Rainbow Foods administrative for the time being. Unfortunately for Rainbow, the location sucks. Its great for advertising. BUT bad for traffic flow. That needs to be developed into an entertainment complex, or multiple restaraunt and services area.
We need to add a vacancy law to Shakopee’s current books. Store fronts should NOT be vacant just because the current owner is being ridiculous for whatever reason. There are great storefronts here that are vacant in shakopee. BUT, THEY ARE VACANT because the owners are ASKING EDEN PRAIRIE, MINNETONKA, WAYZATA, DT MPLS, prices for their spaces. Its ridiculous.
We would have a ton of stores and spaces rented out, but the owners of the storefronts and mall areas, are being stubborn.
Getting a GOOD business into a spot and a business that will stay is much better for the books than waiting for a year or two to get a business that will go bankrupt on 3000-6000 a month rent for a small storefront space.
You need to start supporting your locally owned small businesses first.
Shakopee really needs to give these guys a tax break.
They keep people here, they spend their money when they work here, and they hire our residents more often than not.
There needs to be a downtown shakopee revitalization, and along 17 from 13 to 13.
There needs to be laws on storefront maintenance, land maintenance, and building frontage and maintenance. Some of these areas look awful and are really getting to be an eyesore.
We need to work on alternatives and push forward with OUR OWN plan for LIGHT RAIL from south 169 to MOA and/or MANKATO.
We need to start funding our own expansions, bridges, 6 lane 169 expanses.
We need to figure out how to attract, get, and keep people and businesses here.
The current businesses, services and other offerings is just SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH sustain the population growth and their interest in staying in Shakopee with what we have currently.
Targets Grocery department will fail quickly if they dont put in another door near that end. I dont see many people going in their current doors, walking all the way down to the grocery area and grabbing a few things and walking all the way back to the front. NOT even if you are there for a few other things. The ONLY reason to go all the way down to the grocery area, is IF you NEED groceries. Its a REALLY BAD marketing and traffic decision and I think target will regret the move. Opening another door and a couple of registers at that end will alleviate their issue.
I like the idea of having an Old Country Buffet. If you build it, they will come. Maybe a bowling alley, although I don’t bowl too often or too well. Maybe a Big Lots in the Snyders.
@Big Phish:
A Guitar Center or art store would be nice, but I doubt either one would turn a profit within the first few years, and I think they would eventually close just like Gold’s did.
The reason these places keep coming and going is that it’s a bad location. The whole building should have been rotated 90 degrees so it faces the highway.
The other thing to consider is where customers will be coming from, for whatever store does exist there. Chaska goes to EP to shop, Bloomington goes to Edina, and Prior Lake goes to Burnsville. As you can see, there is not much of a “draw” to any store, unless it’s something that can be supported by shakopee residents alone. Thus, a sports bar/grill would probably have the best success.
edit I actually prefer to go to other towns to do my shopping. Shakopee remains quieter, and it feels more like the country.
Not to mention that we used to have a beautiful Rainbow with great produce and a wonderful meat department. Now it just sits empty and we are forced to shop at an overwhelmed Cub.
The grocery store was Jubas SuperValue. There also used to be a Red Owl in the Transit building on 1st & Beren’s grocery on 2nd that is now a mexican grocery.
we do have a bowling alley on 169
Interesting idea. It does seem a little unfriendly.
I’d like to see then do something about the old downtown. There’s a lot of possiblities. But the first thing they need to do is get rid of the NASCAR wall on 101 and First ST. It makes it look like Shakopee is a prison camp. You could use trees as the barrier or make the barrier design blend with the Huber Park design.
Many years ago That was the Country Kitchen, And across the street was The Happy Chef, And before Happy chef we had Haures Drive in with there Broasted Chicken….Ah Loved it back then!
We need a real Art Store’s, not Michael’s or another craft store, a real ART STORE. Sorry, I am tired of going to that poor excuse of a Down Town (Minneapolis) to get good supplies. Barnes and Nobles was an awesome suggestion. Maybe a Guitar Center. If we get an Art Store and a Guitar Center, I would never have to leave Shakopee. :)>
I thought the Asian Food Restru. next to SA was the old Hardees?
Which grocery story used to be in that spot?
That entire disgusting shopping complex should be razed.
It’s a disgraceful introduction to Historic Downtown Shakopee.
