The Prescott Daily Courier reported that Yavapai County Judge Warren Darrow canceled presentencing hearings that were scheduled to start on Monday. The newspaper reported that Darrow determined Ray has the right to counsel of his choice throughout the case. One of his attorneys had a medical emergency that delayed the Sept. 19 presentencing hearings as originally scheduled.
Three participants in the “Spiritual Warrior” sweat lodge ceremony died following the activity, including 48-year-old Liz Neuman of Prior Lake. Ray was convicted of three counts of negligent homicide. He faces a sentence ranging from probation to nine years in prison.
Neuman’s family – and the families of the two others who died, Kirby Brown of New York and James Shore of Wisconsin – testified about their loss at a June aggravation hearing in an attempt to get the maximum sentencing for Ray.
